India generates some 7.07 million tonnes of textile waste every year and already recovers more than 95% of its pre-consumer share (Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, 2026). Neither scale nor collection is the constraint: the challenge is how much value is retained, with mixed and blended fractions still largely downcycled. That is exactly the fraction PLASTICE has addressed through cascade enzymatic hydrolysis, which recovers polyester fibres from cotton–polyester waste and has been scaled to pilot reactors of more than 1,000 litres. The presentation shares the first directions from the project’s ongoing replication assessment for India — from sorting and certification to anchoring replication in existing recycling clusters.
The analysis behind the presentation will be published shortly on the PLASTICE website as “Indian Textile Recycling Market and Barriers for Trade with the European Union: A PLASTICE Pathway for Circular Textile Innovation and Replication”, drawing on the PLASTICE replication studies. The article has been developed in collaboration with Dr Tania Dey, R&D Manager at the South India Textile Research Association (SITRA) in Coimbatore, India.
PLASTICE presents alongside Green-Tex, FutureProofTextiles and TEX-BREIN.
