Building trust in recycled plastics: PLASTICE’s Blockchain-Based Traceability System

Ensuring transparency and verifying the origin of recycled plastics remains a key challenge for manufacturers integrating them into their products.

Sustainability commitments, regulatory requirements, and growing market expectations demand reliable traceability: the PLASTICE project has addressed this need with a blockchain-based system, designed to provide a secure and verifiable record of plastic materials as they move through the recycling process.

The system is built around an Application Programming Interface (API) that allows companies register and verify recycled materials. To support adoption, PLASTICE developed two web applications for entering and retrieving recycling data. Project partners are now testing them, using the system to document plastic valorisation processes and integrate it into their workflows while refining API integration.

For manufacturers, it will be more than just a compliance tool—it will provide clear, verifiable proof of sustainability efforts. Aligned with the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, it could be among the first real-world examples of a Digital Product Passport. By strengthening links between recyclers and manufacturers, PLASTICE has demonstrated how circular economy solutions can be more transparent, reliable, and accessible.
