Module 1

Innovative technologies to enable circular plastic value chains

This module introduces the main recycling technologies explored in PLASTICE.
You will learn how each technology works, which waste streams it can process, and which products or intermediates it can generate for circular value chains.

UNIT 1.1

Microwave-assisted thermochemical processing: prospects and scalability

Discover how microwave-assisted heating can support more energy-efficient thermochemical recycling. This unit explains the main advantages, technical challenges, and scale-up considerations: from reactor design and temperature control to industrial implementation.

UNIT 1.2

Gasification and catalytic post-treatment for circular plastic valorisation: syngas to olefins conversion

Follow the pathway from plastic-derived Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) to syngas, and from syngas to valuable chemicals. This unit introduces gasification, key process parameters, and catalytic conversion steps for producing DME and light olefins.

UNIT 1.3

Enzymatic hydrolysis: A green approach to separate waste streams for recycling

Understand how enzymatic hydrolysis can help separate mixed textile waste, especially cotton/polyester blends. This unit explains the preparation steps, enzymatic breakdown of cellulose, and recovery of polyester fibres for further recycling.
