A focus on the whole value chain in the textile recycling process

LOCATIONS:

Austria with a geographically distributed supply chain

WASTE VALORISED:

Textile materials, wih a focus on cellulose and PET and PU fractions

The demo-site will focus on the whole value chain in the textile recycling process with the key stakeholders involved. After an initial textile sorting and shredding process, the textile will be fed into a hydrolysis reactor, where the cotton is broken down to sugars with the help of specialized enzymes. These sugars will then be fermented into ethanol. Depending on the mixture of the textile, PET fibers can either be directly recycled or go through a washing step to remove additional contaminants. The PET is then recycled into granules and fibers.

Expected outcomes

  • 1

To reduce incineration and landfill of mixed textile wastes.

  • 2

To valorise the by-products obtained from the PET recycling (i.e. ethanol), leading to a full valorisation of the waste.

  • 3

To develop new bio-based coatings to improve mixed PET-based textiles recyclability.
